The aim of this project was to create a three-dimensional high-resolution map of the geometry of the painting, to measure, study, and analyze the structure of the painting. Exploiting cutting-edge technologies of 3D scanning and three-dimensional computer graphics, it was possible to measure and visualize the art of Jackson Pollock with incredible detail. The instrument used for digitizing is the ATOS Compact Scan from GOM an advanced 3D fringe projection scanner, which provides traceable 3D coordinates. The scanner projects fringe patterns on the surface of the object and determines the position in space of the illuminated area, with a sampling density from 25 through 100 points per square millimeter. The raw three-dimensional measured data have then been processed with the open source system MeshLab, in order to generate the 3D models for the whole painting and the details.
The 3D digitization took around 4 hours: the whole painting has been digitized at a resolution of 0.2 mm; some areas of interest, have then been digitized in detail at a resolution of 0.1 mm.
