Advanced optical High-Speed testing: Investigations of materials and components utilizing High-Speed camerasAdvanced optical High-Speed testing

Meetsystemen: ARAMIS, PONTOS

Keywords: High-Speed Tensile test, crash, drop test, cell phone, machine tool, process optimization

When determining material characteristics, optical measuring techniques provide a larger validity range, particularly with respect to plastic deformation. Higher demands on crash safety in the automotive industry and on the dynamic behavior of other products require high-speed optical solutions because there, no sensor technology is exposed to the high speeds or accelerations.

Rivets are proven to join aluminum sheets or fasten them to the support structure in light weight constructions. This application note shows a simple test set-up, consisting of two aluminum sheets, joined together using three rows of rivets.
Optical Deformation & Strain Measurement in BiomechanicsOptical Deformation & Strain Measurement in Biomechanics

Meetsystemen: ARAMIS

Keywords: biomechanics, digital image correlation

Biomechanics place huge challenges on existing measurement technologies for determining the mechanical properties of these materials, as well as just measuring the full-field displacement and strain of these materials. 3D Image Correlation Photogrammetry is proving to be a powerful tool for these measurements, providing fullfield 3D measurement of the specimens under normal loadings, even at high-speed.

Full-field optical measuring techniques are finding increasing use in industry as development and design tools. Techniques such as moiré and holographic interferometry, speckle and ESPI have been thoroughly described from the theoretical perspective as well as the application engineering viewpoint. This paper describes a deformation measurement technique that has received much less attention than the laser-based methods mentioned above, but which deserves a lot more.

Keywords: High sensivity deformation measurement

Speckle interferometry uses the interference characteristics of electromagnetic waves. It is based on the fact that an optically rough surface appears granulated when it is lit by an coherent light (laser). This phenomenon is called a speckle and the individual grains are termed speckle. After each load step, the reflected light is captured with an CCD camera. In this example the Department of Structural Design of the Eindhoven University of Technology, Faculty Bouwkunde, has used the ESPI SD-30 (3D-ESPI) in tests on masonry and presents their results.
Video-holography, a non-destructive testing (NDT) methodVideo-holography, a non-destructive testing (NDT) method

Meetsystemen: ESPI

Keywords: High sensivity deformation and strain measurement

Video holography is a remote sensing and non-destructive measurement technique for the detection of deformations and strains. This technique is demonstrated with a chipboard specimen during a tensile test where the deformation behaviour in the whole measuring area can be observed in real-time until fracture.
