When determining material characteristics, optical measuring techniques provide a larger validity range, particularly with respect to plastic deformation. Higher demands on crash safety in the automotive industry and on the dynamic behavior of other products require high-speed optical solutions because there, no sensor technology is exposed to the high speeds or accelerations.

To upgrade the electronic technology for the Australian Army’s fleet of Black Hawk helicopters, BAE Systems Australia needed to establish 3D CAD information. Therefore both external and internal data of a helicopter was measured using photogrammetry and optical digitising.

Efficient development of components is realized using less iteration loops in the development process. This is usually done using complex and significant simulations, which must be validated in tests. At this point, fast and easy to apply optical 3D measurement methods can help to replace a multitude of LVDTs and accelerometers, or create new so far unimaginable measurement setups.
